Teenage: Open to all male bodybuilders between 16 years of age and 19 years of age. You must be between 16 and 19 years of age as of 1st January of the year you are competing in. (proof of age required) (There is no Female teenage category).
Junior: Open to all male bodybuilders between 19 years of age and 22 years of age. You must be between 19 and 22 years of age as of 1st January of the year you are competing in. (proof of age required).(There is no Female junior category).
Novice: Open to any competitor who as not won the same competition previously and no weight or height restrictions apply.
Please note in Victoria Competitions Novice is any person that has not won a place in their first year of competing. Victoria competitions hold intermediate for those that may have placed or in their second year of competing not wanting to go in an open class.
Open Men: Open to all male bodybuilders.
The Open Men has several weight divisions as follows:-
Under 65kg (this division will only be available at selected titles)
Over 90kg opens.
Masters Men: Open to all male bodybuilders of the age 40 years and over as of 1st January of the year you are competing in.
Grand Masters Men: Open to all male bodybuilder of the age 50 years and over as of 1st January of the year you are competing in.
Ultra Grand Masters Men: Open to all male bodybuilders of the age 60 years and over as of 1st January of the year you are competing in.
Open Women: Open to all women bodybuilders.
The Open Women has two weight divisions as follows:-
Masters Women: Open to all female bodybuilders of the age 35 years and over as of 1st January of the year you are competing in.
Round 1 – Muscularity
Score Percentage of Round 1 – 50%
In this round competitors perform the following compulsory poses:
1. Front Double Biceps
2. Front Lateral Spread
3. Side Chest (either side at the choice of the competitor)
4. Side triceps (again either side)
5. Rear Double Biceps (spike one calf)
6. Rear Lateral Spread
7. Abdominal and Thigh
In this round judges are comparing competitors for the following:
Muscularity – The shape, thickness and quality of muscle.
Proportion – The balance of one muscle group against another.
Definition – Muscle separation, definition and vascularity.
Balance – Left side of the body compared to the right, front compared to rear.
Round 2 – Symmetry
Score percentage of Round 2 – 50%
In this round the competitors will stand in numerical order facing the judges and they will perform four one quarter turns – the first will be facing the judges, then the competitors will be asked to make three one quarter turns to the right, thus displaying their physique from every angle.
In this round judges are looking for the following:
Structural Flaws – Faults within the competitor’s skeletal structure.
Proportion – The balance of one muscle group to another eg. Lower body to upper body, biceps to calves, waist to quadriceps etc.
Balance – The left side of a competitor’s body compared to the right, the front compared to the rear.
Symmetry – The competitor’s overall shape and line.
Round 3 – Free Posing
Routine to music is optional. Routine is not judged
Competitor’s will pose to their own music for a maximum of 60 seconds.
You will be asked for your music at the official registration in exchange for your competition number which must be pinned on to your posing attire and be in a visible area at all times. (Please check with your promoter of competition for preferred requirements’ for music.) Music formats that acceptable are CD Audio – preferred, WAV, MP3. Music must be provided on a CD. Please also ensure you bring a backup CD. Duration of music for all physique competitors is up to 60 secs to perform your routine. If you choose to do your routine in less than the permitted time this is also fine.
It must be remembered that, first & foremost, a physique contest is a Bodybuilding contest. Contestants must exhibit a degree of muscular development, which will naturally vary according to the class. Obviously, one would not expect a Teenage competitor to exhibit the mass of an Open class competitor. Muscular size will vary between Male & Female competitors.
However, when making comparisons within a class, muscle mass & size plays an important part with the more advanced muscularity scoring higher points.
This factor must be considered in conjunction with muscle mass. Separation is the delineation between the muscle groups of the physique. Excess subcutaneous fatty tissue under the skin blurs this muscular division resulting in a smooth appearance, which detracts from muscular mass. A good physique must have muscular mass, which is complemented by sharp muscular separation rather than being flawed by being too smooth.
This must not be confused with separation. Definition is the display of the individual muscles & muscle fibre’s taken to a wish degree (often referred to as ‘ripped’ or ‘shredded’).
A physique that has good muscle mass, separation & definition must be scored highly. However, definition that is taken to the point of emaciation will only reduce mass & fullness cannot be judged so highly.
Definition should be only to show clean muscle mass; otherwise the muscles appear stringy & flat.
A key ingredient in a winning physique & one that owes its qualities mainly to the genetic component of the competitor. Wide shoulders, narrow hips, trim waist & a deep rib-cage are genetically endowed qualities on which a championship physique can be built. Faults such as knock-knees, bowed legs, rounded shoulders or any curvature of the spine, whilst unfortunate, are to be scored down during the symmetry round.
This must not be confused with symmetry, although a proportionate physique owes much to it being symmetrical in the first place.
A proportionate physique is one that has no overall development in which each individual body part complements the others in both size & shape. The upper body should not be developed to the extent that it overpowers the lower body & vice-versa. All body parts should flow in harmony with no body part being over developed to the detriment of the others. Right & left sides should be equally developed, so as to not exhibit no readily observable differences in size. Adjoining muscle groups should enhance each other rather than detract.
These qualities; Muscle Mass, Separation, Definition, Symmetry & Proportion, are the major considerations when assessing any physique, but must be viewed in conjunction with some rather less important, (but not trivial) considerations which can enhance or detract from the major qualities mentioned.
POSING & PRESENTATION
Posing and presentation are key elements for judging. Tan, hair & makeup DOES matter so ensure that you get these elements right. ANB have partnered with specific tanning & hair & beauty teams for each event that understand the individual stages and the judges requirements. Use this to your advantage.
Avoid large overpowering jewellery and accessories – Simple is always best
Smile and engage with the judges and audience & present yourself with confidence
Check you are wearing your number on the right side and it is facing the right way
Listen to the MC and watch for direction by ANB officials
As you move across the stage to perform your poses ensure you stop and display grace as you move through your transitions. Hold your poses for at least 2-3 seconds Competitors who move way to quickly are not making the most of their time or allowing the judges to have a good look at them.
When practicing your posing it’s so important to really understand your strengths and weakness as a competitor. Not everyone can pose the same way as each competitor holds different structure and shape.
To be successful with posing and get the most out of your time onstage you need know how to display the best parts of you.
· If you have a wide waist you may want to stand more side on to give your waist a smaller appearance
· If you have less defined legs needed for your division, squeeze your quads to show more definition
· If you are too defined for a particular category ensure you don’t tense or squeeze your muscles at all
· If you feel one side looks much better then the other, display your better side more often
Practice with and without a mirror as there is no mirror on stage. Its very important to feel you’re posing correctly so make posing part of your training program at least 2-3 days a week and focus on your transitions becoming fluent as you change from one pose to the next
Under no circumstances bending when in your back pose and keep your legs about shoulder width apart. This will be taken as lewd presentation. Judges are viewing you from below, so class and professionalism needs to be kept at all times & any posing deemed lewd or sexual in manner will be negatively scored
Registration – Please check with event promoter to confirm registration close off dates & times & know the division you want to compete in prior to entering the event. Have your registration forms filled out and prepared for the officials. Pre Register if possible & ensure that you do not miss your registration time
DO NOT sit on the toilet seats or chairs at the venue unless you want to muck up your tan & cop a cleaning fee from the organisers.
Posing Suits – Ensure you’ve picked a bikini / posing suit that compliments your body shape. Low cut bikini bottoms tend to cut you off. A slightly higher cut design with a ‘V’ front can create a more streamline look. Ensure you use a suit adhesive like bikini bite to keep your suit in place.
Heals – Taller competitors try to go for 4-5” heel & Shorter competitors a 5-6“ heel. For new clear high heels you’ll find the front plastic very tight cutting into your foot. Use a hairdryer when you first get them to soften the plastic and pop your feet in. Wear them around for at least 30 mins to let them mold to your feet a little better. Always practice in your stage heels and learn how to walk confidently in them.
